Reducing Environmental Footprints

ETNO members are at the forefront of innovating for a sustainable future. They provide the backbone that enables sustainable innovation in every other industry, and that helps businesses and individuals reduce their environmental footprints. A WWF-ETNO report estimates that overall, the use of information and communication technologies could lead to a 50 million tonne reduction of CO2 per year.

A few examples:

  • Smart utility metering (for electricity, gas and water) monitors power and utility usage, and is helping millions of European households use resources more wisely.
  • ETNO members are focusing on the design of electrical and electronic equipment that has minimal impact on the environment.
  • The ICT industry is examining sustainable production options, such as decentralised production, production on demand, and converging technologies (e.g. nanotechnology and biotechnology). All of these innovations will help reduce our collective environmental footprints.

The ETNO Sustainability Charter has attracted 21 member companies since its original inception in 1996. The Charter outlines the importance of doing business in a sustainable way. Each Signatory commits to report regularly on their Sustainability or Environmental performance, which means that they have the tools in place to monitor company performance. 100% of ETNO's Sustainability Charter Signatories include environmental considerations in the development of new products and services.
