Optimising Productivity, Improving Efficiency
The ICT industry saves energy by following minimum standards, adhering to voluntary energy-use agreements, putting in place procurement policies and providing better information on product performance.
A few examples of ETNO member companies' energy-conscious activities:
- Removing the least energy-efficient equipment from networks
- Encouraging competition between suppliers to achieve improved products and network equipment
- Ensuring procurement teams choose the most energy-efficient equipment and suppliers
- Monitoring and measuring all major greenhouse gas emissions from direct and indirect activities related to the business
- Designing energy efficiency into all new equipment and services, including terminals, fixed/mobile network elements, buildings, and offices
- Increasing the use of renewable energy
Thanks to ICT developments such as broadband, business practices have also been optimised: if one out of every three business trips was replaced by a video conference, Europe would realise a 33 million tonne reduction of CO2 emissions.
ETNO has published a report summarising the industry's efficient energy use and examples of best practices.
