In Portugal, more and more patients and healthcare facilities are benefiting from new Internet-based telemedicine functionalities.

Portugal Telecom's services are enabling consultations via videoconference, as well as remote eco-cardiograms. In 2008, for example, more than 7,000 patients "saw" their doctors thanks to the videoconferencing service.

Portugal Telecom has a real focus on e-health. Their recently-developed "Digital Health Network" prototype is allowing more than 10,000 users to schedule medical appointments online, and is enabling appropriate providers to access patient histories. Efficiency and innovative online functionalities are the hallmarks of this effort, and the network is planned to roll-out across other areas of Portugal throughout 2009 and 2010.
