Measuring your footprint:
What is your company's carbon impact?

06/10/2009

You know your own shoe size, but how do you begin to measure your company's carbon footprint? For starters, rely on the experts.

BT is a global organisation known for its efforts in protecting the environment. In recent years it focused on finding ways to change business practices to truly make a difference on its environmental impact. Small changes in the use of IT can have a big impact. BT found that using broadband-based conferencing services instead of face-to-face meetings saved the company 97,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2006-2007. It also saved the company more than €153 million in travel costs.

Now BT is using that technology and experience to help its customers.

BT offers "Carbon Impact Assessment" (CIA) consultancy services to find energy hotspots, determine how an organisation's energy is used, and provide solutions on reducing emissions and improving performance.

The BT CIA analysts examine the energy used by an organisation and identify working practices and business processes that determine the energy demand. To advise clients where their biggest challenges exist, the analysts identify opportunities to introduce and use new technologies to reduce emissions and improve performance. Options frequently include data centre consolidation, shared services and hosting, conferencing and flexible working.
