Enabling a Sustainable Information Society

Telecommunications network operators deliver products, services and solutions that create a more sustainable society based on improved information sharing, optimised business practices and enhanced efficiency.

A few examples:

  • Technology has resulted in increased information sharing in many fields and industries. Healthcare, for one, has realised great benefits from information sharing among professionals, across geographies and between platforms, which has resulted in a decrease in CO2 emissions.
  • Technology directly contributes to social inclusion through distance diagnosis solutions, platforms which enable doctors in remote areas to liaise with colleagues in larger hospitals.
  • Telecoms services and products (such as broadband technology) result in a need for people to travel less and use fewer resources. European Commission figures estimate that 6% of European workers telework for at least 10% of their working time.

New e-communications services make it possible for more people to engage in the information society (social inclusion) create new business opportunities and reduce their environmental footprints. The result: an increasingly inclusive and sustainable information society.
